Technical support to the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA) Liberia

DG Development (European Commission) - Project Dates:
August 2019 - August 2022

Description of Project:
The objective of this project was to improve the institutional capacity of the National Authority for Fisheries and Aquaculture to deliver on its national and international fisheries sector governance obligations as a regulator, supervisor, and coordinating agency. The three year project provided a long-term fisheries management expert to be embedded in NaFAA to provide enhancements in NaFAA's ability to ensure sustainable fisheries management, and for a variety of short-term experts to complete specific inputs and capacity building related to fisheries legislation/regulations, fisheries economics, fisheries patrol vessel operations and maintenance, MCS data analysis and management of the Fisheries Monitoring Centre, fish hygiene and safety standards, and monitoring and evaluation. A range of technical outputs were provided, including fisheries management plans, a business plan for NaFAA, investment promotion guides, a road map for a competent authority, MoUs between NaFAA and other organisations in Liberia to ensure sustainable fisheries management, and guides on compliance with RFMO obligations.
