Assessing the impact of the Scottish landings target on the pelagic fleet Scotland

Scottish Fishermens' Organisation - Project Dates:
March 2017 - October 2017

Description of Project:
The Scottish Government proposed a landing target for Scottish pelagic vessels to land back to Scottish ports of 55%. Two of the POs representing the Scottish pelagic fleet asked Poseidon to quantify the impact of the proposal.

Services Provided:

Poseidon undertook industry consultation with vessel operators and processors to understand the impacts of the landings target. The report found that the impact of requiring vessels to land back to Scotland rather than into Norway resulted in a considerable opportunity cost for the Scottish fleet and the numerous crew and businesses associated with the fleet. Alternative measures were proposed to encourage more Scottish landings. This was presented to the Scottish minister as part of the PO response to a consultation on the economic link.
