Triple Line Fisheries Performance Assessment Tool Global

Food and Agricultural Organisation FAO - Project Dates:

Description of Project:
The Coastal Fisheries Initiative (CFI) Programme aimed to contribute to the global objective of having coastal fisheries delivering sustainable environmental, social and economic benefits; mainly through demonstrating holistic, ecosystem-based management and improving coastal fisheries governance. As a Programme, consisting of 5 interlinked Projects, the CFI played an important role in catalyzing greater collaboration and fostering knowledge sharing in coastal fisheries.The CFI examined how different approaches worked in different situations through its regional/national child projects (West Africa, Latin America and Indonesia) and brought this new knowledge to the international arena to be examined, shared, understood and replicated, as appropriate.

An important element of the programme was to assess fisheries management performance by developing a Fisheries Performance Asessment  Instrument (FPAI) that covers the triple bottom line approach: ecological, social and economic indicators.

Poseidon worked to to develop a Baseline Assessment Tool (pre-FPA) that included the preparation of questionnaires and development of an assessment tool in the form of an excel file which could be used to capture and present information on:

A full characterisation of the fishery;

A set of quantitative ecological, economic and social indicators, which could be used to benchmark fishery performance and generate visual outputs of that performance;

An assessment of available data and prioritisation for data collection to inform performance indicators
