Food and Agricultural Organisation FAO and Regional Activity Centre for Specially Protected Areas (UNEP) - Project Dates:
June 2006 - July 2006
Description of Project:
FAO is currently involved in the UNEP/MAP (Mediterranean Action Plan) PDF-B project “Strategic Partnership for the Mediterranean Large Marine Ecosystem – Regional Component: Implementation of agreed actions for the protection of the environmental resources of the Mediterranean Sea and its coastal areas”, and more specifically in the implementation of the Strategic Action Programme for the Conservation of Biological Diversity in the Mediterranean Region (SAP BIO) component related to the conservation and sustainable management of vulnerable or endangered fish and invertebrates.
Based on the analyses of the regional reviews and results of the SAP BIO regarding fisheries impacts on biodiversity, sensitive habitats and species, FAO has developed and submitted to UNEP/MAP a Mediterranean Strategy integrating marine biodiversity conservation and fisheries in the Region.
The implementation of the SAP BIO related to the management of Marine Protected Areas (MPA) is the responsibility of two other partners (RAC/SPA and WWF) in charge to develop two separate briefs: (i) Strengthening of the MPA network at regional level and (ii) Creating new MPAs.
