Examination of the environmental, economic and social impacts of discards. A global inventory was presented on legislation aimed at discard reduction i.e., bycatch reduction and bycatch utilisation. Global, regional and national discard reduction programmes were profiled to consider their effectiveness, and recommendations were made about further priority actions.
Contacts were made with national and regional organisations worldwide to collect information on discard reduction programmes. The effectiveness of accompanying legislation and regulatory processes for discard reduction were also examined in order to provide an assessment of these programmes and to prepare recommendations for further priority actions. In particular a review was made of any research into the economic, social and environmental impacts of discards.
