Shrimp farming plastic waste management Vietnam

GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH) - Project Dates:
January 2024 - March 2025

Description of Project:
Plastic waste from fisheries and aquaculture is a significant contributor to marine pollution in Vietnam, prompting the government to strengthen its policy framework through the National Action Plan for Management of Marine Plastic Litter by 2030 and the Action Plan for Marine Plastics Waste Management in the Fisheries Sector (2020–2030). A World Bank–funded baseline study under the Sustainable Fisheries Development Project assessed plastic waste sources and impacts in fisheries and aquaculture, highlighting growing waste streams from aquaculture plastics and identifying priority measures to support effective implementation of national action plans.

Services Provided:

Poseidon co-delivered the World Bank–funded baseline assessment with IUCN Vietnam, and subsequently led the GIZ-funded study on plastic waste streams and 3R potential in the shrimp farming sector in Soc Trang Province. Poseidon assessed key plastic waste streams, evaluated feasible reduce, reuse, and recycle options, and supported local capacity building, with findings intended to be replicated across coastal Vietnam.
