Commercial fisheries impact assessment of a proposed aquaculture site at Hyskeir UK

MOWI - Project Dates:
March 2024 - September 2024

Description of Project:
Mowi sought consent for a proposed new aquaculture development project located just to the east of Hyskeir, a low-lying islet in the Minch of the Inner Hebrides. At the regulatory pre-application stage, Mowi had collected core data and had initiated public engagement. Mowi required a commerical fisheries impact assessment for this proposed site.

Services Provided:

Poseidon produced a Phase 1 desktop report that characterised commercial fisheries within the proposed Mowi site and across the wider region. This report incorporated geographic information system (GIS) and statistical analyses of vessel monitoring system (VMS) data, along with other available spatial and landings data, and identified the key fisheries interests requiring more detailed assessment.

Following an on-site stakeholder consultation, Poseidon also produced a formal Commercial Fisheries Technical Report. This report included an impact assessment addressing key effects related to fishing exclusion and displacement. The commercial fisheries impact assessment comprised the identification of main receptors and the assessment of impact significance, the identification of likely displacement impacts, the assessment of potential mitigation opportunities, and the provision of an approximate valuation of key fisheries operating within the proposed Mowi site, presented as a confidential annex.
