Institutional Analysis of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Sector Indonesia

FAO RAP - Project Dates:
November 2006 - January 2007

Description of Project:

On 26 December 2004 a large tsunami hit Northern Sumatra causing over 200,000 deaths in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Province alone. Following this disaster, an unprecedented relief effort has aimed at rehabilitating the shattered infrastructure and restoring the livelihoods of the coastal communities.

By the end of 2006, much of the infrastructure is in the process of being replaced and attentions are now turning to the long-term development of a sustainable fisheries and aquaculture industry. It is recognised by FAO and other agencies that a strong and cohesive governance is essential and that a study is needed to analyse the current institutional capacity and identify the training and other needs to build the different sectoral institutions.

Services Provided:
eidon provided the team leader for this sectoral institutional analysis. Visits were made to Banda Aceh, Sigli, Meulaboh, Jakarta, Bangkok and Rome to examine the institutional environment, motivation, capacity and performance of the different organisations and groups involved in the fisheries and aquaculture sector in NAD. As part of this process, training was given in institutional analysis and training needs assessment.
