FAO Expert workshop on LCA/GHG emission strategies Global

Description of Project:
As a step towards developing a comprehensive framework and global capacity approach for defining resource use, comparative production efficiency and GHG/climate change interactions, the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department proposed to investigate methods for understanding and enabling mitigation of GHG emissions in fisheries and aquaculture production systems and supply chains using case studies and technical reviews. This information was presented at an FAO workshop that brought together fisheries experts, LCA/GHG specialists and representatives from the private sector to develop and progress an agreed framework that can be used for assessment of GHG emissions in specific seafood production systems and which could also be used to estimate global GHG emissions from the sub sectors. The outputs from the workshop will be used as an opportunity to prepare an FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Technical Paper (FTP) on LCA / GHG emission methods in fisheries and aquaculture, and as basis for further support in capacity building, policy development and strategic investment.

Services Provided:
Poseidon was required to assist the FAO in collecting current background materials, formulating appropriate methodologies for assessing GHG interactions in key subsectors, and in interacting with the workshop outputs and with other stakeholder contributions towards developing an effective framework and implementation strategies for GHG mitigation and related industry outcomes.
