Strategic adviser to FISH4ACP implementation in the Marshall Islands and The Gambia

Description of Project:
Within the Fisheries and Aquaculture Division of the FAO, the FISH4ACP project (“Sustainable development of fisheries and aquaculture value chains in Africa, Caribbean and Pacific countries”), aims at improving the sustainability of 12 selected fisheries and aquaculture value chains through five main components/specific objectives: i) robust fisheries and aquaculture improvement strategies are developed and agreed with stakeholders; ii) the economic performance of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in select value chains is improved; iii) the inclusiveness and social sustainability of select value chains are improved; iv) the environmental sustainability of select value chains is enhanced; and v) MSMEs in selected value chains have access to additional sources of finance and investment. FISH4ACP is a 5-year project funded by the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Following a lead role by Poseidon in the analysis and design phases of the FISH4ACP programme in both the Marshall Islands (focussing on the tuna purse seine value chain) and The Gambia (mangrove oyster value chain), Poseidon provided a senior consultant to work as a strategic adviser to FAO implementing staff in both countries. 

Services Provided:

The consultant

  1. Provided overall steer to the implementation of the value chain upgrading strategies, ensuring activities developed contribute to the achievement of strategic objectives.
  2. Propose adaptations to the strategies, to reflect the reality of implementation and adapt it to changing circumstances.
  3. Participated in high level discussion on VC upgrading strategy implementation with government officials, VC Multistakeholder Partnership (MSP) members or other institutions/project partners.
  4. Co-facilitated multi-stakeholder workshops or meetings by assisting with the organisation, preparing and delivering presentations and by facilitating discussions with participants.
  5. Completed quality control on FISH4ACP project implementation tools (Letters of agreement, terms of references, technical specifications, annual work plans, etc.).
  6. Contributed to the adaptation of the FISH4ACP methodology instruments.
  7. Supported global learning, the exchange of information and lessons learned and shared feedback to improve the VCA methodology
