Feasibility study of Fish Aggregating Device (FAD) deployment to benefit artisanal fishers along the Zambezia coast mozambique
MCC - Project Dates:
July 2024 - March 2025
Description of Project:
The region from the Zambezi River delta up to Angoche district in Nampula is part of the Sofala Bank, one of the world’s most productive shrimp fishery industries, with terrestrial and marine protected areas, and high value biodiversity including 178,000 ha of mangrove forests. Expanding populations, resource conflicts, and unsustainable use and management practices have resulted in severe over-exploitation. Climate change impacts exacerbate the situation. As a result, the coastal population is increasingly subject to the full brunt of cyclones and storm surges, and their food intake and livelihoods are under threat. The Government of Mozambique and the Government of the USA, via Millenium Challenge Corporation (MCC), came together to develop the Coastal Livelihoods and Climate Resilience Project (CLCR) to address these issues.
Services Provided:
As part of the detailed early design and implementation plannking for the project, Poseidon provided exeprtise and inputs to a Ginger Sofreco team which conducted an assessment of the feasibility of Fish Aggregating Device (FAD) deployment to benefit artisanal fishers along the Zambézia+ coast. The assessment and feasibility included technical and financial feasibility (the main focus of Poseidon's inputs), social factors and potential conflicts, climate change and climate events, other risks, and compliance with safeguards frameworks. And recommendations were made about a pilot programme of FAD deployment.
