CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency and DG MARE Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (European Commission) - Project Dates:
April 2025 - October 2026

Description of Project:
Ensuring that fishery and aquaculture products (FAPs) are traceable from the point-of-catch or harvest to the final point-of-sale is crucial for ensuring that all such products available on the EU market are safe, legally and sustainably caught, and correctly labelled. This study assesses the current EU traceability systems and minimum traceability information for lots of some specific FAPs intended for human consumption placed on the EU-market. The main objective of the study was the identification of bottlenecks and possible solutions for the traceability systems and minimum traceability information of lots of prepared and preserved FAPs.

Services Provided:

Poseidon contributed to a team of experts to: i) provide an overview of traceability systems and information, ii) complete case studies in various Member States, iii) describe and consider available technical solutions – including digital ones - for traceability systems for EU seafood processing operators, including a cost analysis of their implementation, iv) Identify elements of traceability information for lots of prepared and preserved FAPs and define a set of minimum elements, v) elaborate recommendations for cost efficient traceability systems and minimum traceability information for lots of prepared and preserved FAPs, and vi) complete an analysis of the impact of digital traceability systems for fresh and frozen FAPs in terms of costs and reduction of administrative burden.
